Checking out Free Music in the Community: Lincolnwood Chamber Orchestra Concert at Republic Bank

One of the best aspects about living and exploring in Chicagoland is discovering that some of the best community events are budget-friendly or even completely free. In the summertime, these are everywhere, with plenty of options to choose from. There could be outdoor concerts along the skyline downtown, in your local park, or even indoors so that you can beat the feels-like 105-degree, popsicle-melting heat we’ve had this week.   We found one related to America’s 250th birthday and attended an after-hours networking event hosted by the Lincolnwood Chamber of Commerce at Republic Bank in the Skokie/Lincolnwood area on the north side. The combined networking and performance created a unique opportunity to enjoy live classical music with food in a classy, newly renovated bank setting. It was sponsored by Loeber Motors as a free community event; it was pretty fancy, and because of the local nature, it was not too crowded (Bingo!).   Attending this was a pleasant su...

Make It a Chicago Afternoon: Magnolia Bakery, Windy City LIVE, Couch Alley & Lunch at LondonHouse

One of the best parts about being downtown is that there are so many options of places to go, so you'll never just go to one place! Our main activity was attending a live taping of Windy City LIVE, but we couldn't pass up the opportunity to make it a full day of exploring the irresistible downtown Chicago Loop area. (It did inspire our name, right?!) Since we had an early-morning taping at the ABC 7 Chicago studio on State Street, we arrived early and noticed that Magnolia Bakery was just a short walk away. Naturally, we grabbed breakfast and decided that if there was ever a day to have banana pudding for breakfast, this was it. 😄 Along with coffee and pastries, Magnolia's famous banana pudding made for a fun (and delicious) way to kick off the day.

This bakery became famous in NYC, but its State Street location has become a Chicago must-visit spot for sweets. After breakfast, we headed over to the studio for the live taping of Windy City LIVE. Watching the unfolding inside the studio as the production crew, hosts, and audience prepare for each segment was really cool, and something we wrote about in a different post.

Once the show wrapped up, we took advantage of the beautiful weather and explored downtown on foot. Our first stop was Couch Alley, one of Chicago's most colorful hidden gems. Tucked away in the Loop, this playful alley features vibrant murals, painted couches, and creative street art. It's the perfect place to snap a few photos and discover something unexpected in the middle of the city.

From there, we wandered along Wacker Drive, taking in the Chicago River and some of the city's most iconic architecture. On a gorgeous summer day, it's hard to beat a leisurely walk through downtown with so many incredible views around every corner. To end the afternoon, we settled in for lunch on the rooftop patio at LondonHouse Chicago. Sitting in the open-air space decorated with neon flowers and a cherry-blossom arch, overlooking the river, was the perfect way to relax after a busy morning. Between the historic buildings on Michigan Ave, passing boats, and beautiful skyline, it's one of those quintessential Chicago experiences that never gets old. There are many options with great downtown views, but this one certainly takes the cake!
Lunchbreak in Chicago at London House

So, if you're heading downtown, don't just go for one activity; plan to make a day of it! It's almost like when you go to the grocery store for one thing and end up with a whole cart-full. There are so many options, so just know in advance that you can easily check out 3-4 things and still be home before rush hour starts! If you're following our plan, start with breakfast nearby, explore a hidden alley, stroll along the river, and enjoy lunch with a view. It turned out to be one of those simple Chicago days that remind us that the adventure and local discoveries that create unique moments are endless!

Chicago Ladies Loop Tip: Wear comfortable walking shoes, bring your camera, and leave yourself a few extra hours after the show. Some of Chicago's best experiences are just a short walk away.
